The parish of Loddiswell lies
at the heart of the South Hams, deep in rich farmlands, amidst
rolling hills and gentle valleys.
In prehistoric times the hill fort of the Blackdown Rings gave
panoramic views across vast distances, from the sea to the distant
slopes of Dartmoor, and tiny settlements were made in forest
clearings.
Hamlets, farmsteads and villages later grew, linked by tracks
wending their mazy way around the endless ribbon of field boundaries
that even today form the pattern of the parish landscape.
In more recent times the area has seen the coming and going
of great social changes; the arrival of the railway and the
expansion wrought by the Industrial Revolution.
Loddiswell has also been caught up in the tide of important
national events. Throughout all this time, the people of the
area have made Loddiswell their home, and it is for them that
this book has been produced as a celebration of the end of the
old millennium and the beginning of the new.
