Kingsbridge - Devon

Kingsbridge lies at the head of the Kingsbridge Estuary and has been the principal market place of the region since 962 when it was granted a Royal Charter.

Whilst in Kingsbridge a trip to the Cookworthy Museum of Rural Life in Fore Street is a must. Housed in a beautiful 17th century school building, there is a wonderful collection of dolls houses, toys, costumes and old local photographs.

A river cruise to Salcombe is a very pleasant way to see the countryside, enjoy a round trip of approximately an hour, whilst being part of the maritime activity which makes the area between Kingsbridge and Salcombe such fun and so unique.

It is considered by many that Kingsbridge is the capital of the South Hams and certainly there is a great deal to see and do. There is much activity including numerous golf courses, horse riding, trout fishing and a Sports Centre with some 50+ activities.

Prawle Point to Salcombe

Along the coast is East Portlemouth, with its fine sandy beaches, overlooking the popular town and harbour of Salcombe.

One of the most beautiful sailing and fishing centres in the world, Salcombe Harbour offers a safe haven to visiting yachts with a complete range of associated facilities. Apart from the sizeable local shellfishing fleet, there is no commercial traffic.

There is a ferry service which takes visitors from East Portlemouth to Salcombe where there are excellent shops, pubs and restaurants to suit all tastes. It is a location particularly popular with yachtsmen, writers and artists as its natural beauty combined with the excellent sailing facilities enable all those visiting to appreciate its unique situation.

Just outside Salcombe is Overbecks Museum and Gardens at Sharpitor. There is a beautiful 6 acre garden with an astonishing range of exotic trees, shrubs and plants and the National Trust site enjoys fine views over the sea and the estuary.
The house contains a museum of ship models and other relics and a secret room for children containing dolls and toys.
